my cats on a road trip are they safe from winter cold?
My brother made a 14 hr trip from Louisville ky to Texas to pick up my two cats because I was unable to due to work. they have been set up with a carrier tent material and water and fur material pillow and kitty litter. He had to stop midway in the trip but kept them in the car with no food in about 30 to 40 degree weather. Will they get sick from overnight stay in car he wasnt able to move them to the hotel for the night because he is allergic and doesnt know how to handle cats.
they are older 1 is 7even yrs and the other 2 this was unavoidable because my brother was scared they woul escape from him if he tried to move them. They are very healthy cats otherwise
Hi Ahmed,
That is a tough situation, and your brother was very kind to make that trip for you, especially because he is allergic. They should be ok, since they will huddle with each other, and had heat in the car, I assume for most of the time of travel.
Leaving cats in a car during summer heat is a real problem, and highly dangerous. This seems much safer to me.
The main thing I would be concerned about is if the temp remains below freezing that the water might get frozen, so I am assuming he will check on that also to make sure they have fresh water. Cats can survive longer without food, than water, which must be available at all times.

They really should not get sick from the weather, since they have shelter and warm places to huddle in. Just think of the cats who are outdoor cats, and who deal with cold all the time.
Cats should eat twice a day, but 14 hours without food should not be an issue. After all, some folks work long hours and occassionally their cats may go that long without eating. It is probably better that they are not eating while they are traveling, to avoid digestive upset, so they should be ok.
Since he will be using heat in the car on the trip home with the cats, it should also not be a problem taking them into a warm house after the cold, either. They will be warmed by the car on the final leg of the trip.
What I don't understand is how your brother is dealing with the allergies on the drive itself. He is very brave to be in such a close situation with them.
Just keep an extra careful eye on them when they get back to you and make sure they are acting normal, eating and using their box, is all I can add here.
Good luck on a safe arrival.
